Understanding Maintenance on Solar Power Generators

Most people think routine maintenance is only checking and repairing minor problems. While this is part of it, maintenance on your solar power generator is designed to allow it to function for many more years. From an economic standpoint, maintenance adds value to your system because it will continue to produce your free power efficiently. From a practical standpoint, it gives you peace of mind during periods when you require power the most, be it at home or during outdoor activities.

Maintenance on Solar Panels

Generators are nothing without their solar panels! It is extremely important to attend to their cleaning and wash off any dust or obstruction bio-side. Mud, leaves, and even bird droppings will cause a sunlight blockage. Panels do not require tool maintenance. Just ensure you have a soft cleaning textile, a gentle brush to scrub away and soapy water to wash. Depending on the area you live, you may need to do this more often than every few months. Panels may be covered and protected but always check for cracks that will cause underperformance.

Inspecting Battery Health  

A battery’s condition will impact the amount of energy the power generator can give. Step one is checking the battery’s charge level. Most generators will have some form of battery charge display. Rechargeable batteries can lose their charge quickly, so avoid over discharging, over charging, and repetitive deep cycles. For maintenance, inspect the battery for swelling and leaking, which will signal the need for replacement. Keeping the battery in a cool dry place also helps to maintain optimum performance.  

Examining Wiring and Connections

Poor wiring and connections can result in power loss, and can even be a safety hazard. This is why the wiring and connections should be examined closely. Check all connections with the solar panels, battery and generators and be sure that all the connectors are properly fastened. If any of the connectors are corroded, clean it with a dry brush. Do avoid yanking or twisting the connectors. If any frayed wires or damaged connectors are found, the system should be repaired to maintain operational capacity and for safety.

Testing inverter functionality

An inverter makes alternating current (AC) power from the direct current (DC) power generated from solar panels and batteries. To test an inverter, plug small devices, such as a phone charger, into the generator. This will help determine if the generator makes power. If the device does not turn on, the inverter may not be functioning properly. Also, check the inverter for unusual sounds, as buzzing or clicking may indicate possible need for maintenance. Some generators also provide some error lights for the user to check the inverter, so make sure to also check those lights. If the inverter is not working, get it professional serviced in order to prevent possible more serious issues.  

Keeping a maintenance record

Keeping a record on maintenance tasks will provide an effective means to track progress, as well as spotting issues that may be occurring over time. Indicate when maintenance tasks, such as panel cleaning, battery checking, and wiring inspection, are completed at a given time. Details such as the battery charge and any minor adjustments to the system should also be recorded. This documentation will help determine when certain components should be replaced, such as batteries that hold charge poorly. Also, this documentation will help in troubleshooting should any problems arise in the future. This record will also provide information on the system for maintenance should a professional need to be involved.
